The Star Festival (Tanabata)
Tanabata in English is
called the Star Festival. It comes from an old legend in China. Two stars, the
Herd boy Star and Weaver Star were in love but could meet only once a year, on
July 7th, if the weather was good. We celebrate Tanabata so that they can see
each other.
There was a herd boy called Hikoboshi. He fell in love with a girl called
Orihime. They began to play every day and didn’t work at all. Orihime’s father
heard about it and got very angry and decided to separate them on each side of
the river called Ama. However he said that they would meet on July 7th and
that’s the only day they could meet.
On July 7th we decorate bamboo grass with colored paper (origami) and
oblong card call Tanzaku. On Tanzaku we write our own wish and put on the bamboo
grass.
