The challenge will always be there, but it doesn't need to be so challenging that it stops being fun. Some odds and ends can help prevent frustration. Although it's not much, here's what I've managed to dig up.

SEGA MASTER SYSTEM CONTROL PAD MK II
Master System Control Pad Mk II
Manufacturer: Sega
Model: 3020
Type: Controller

This second iteration of the Master System controller (although not officially given a secondary desgnation) features a more NES-like design, eschewing the control pad joystick socket, and moving the cord from the side of the controller to the top edge.

SEGA LIGHT PHASER
Sega Light Phaser
Manufacturer: Sega
Model: 3050
Type: Light gun

Initially, Sega had invested in Tatsunoko Productions to produce the anime Zillion, a scifi series that prominently featured a man-portable beam weapon that was identical to the Light Phaser. Although Sega did nothing with the Light Phaser in Japan, there was a Laser Tag style version of the gun used to play light gun games in a different manner. The Zillion games for the Master System are platform adventure and shooting affairs, not light gun games, so the references may be lost in America. Nevertheless, it looks cool, in spite of its horrible grip angle.
The Sega Light Phaser operates like most other video game light guns, in that it verifies onscreen targets against the system with each trigger pull by use of display modification, and effectively reads a circle around expected targets.
My Light Phaser is inexplicably missing the back cap. I found it that way, but spare parts don't exist.
