Accessories

PSX accessories are few in number for now, and hard to find. Here's what I've managed to pick up in my hunting.

SONY PLAYSTATION CONTROLLER

Sony PlayStation Controller
Manufacturer: Sony Computer Entertainment(possibly others)
Model: SCPH-1080
Type: Controller

A refresh of the launch SCPH-1010 controller, this model is slightly larger, has some differences with its shoulder buttons, and has a ferrite coil near the plug to mitigate RF interference. A very cool controller, similar to the SNES pad, but the segmented d-pad can become uncomfortable with extended play. Nintendo's patent on the cross-shaped pad shows its strength here. The SCPH-1080 comes in various colors, but I like the metal flake carbon one the most. It would be cool to have a black PSX to go with it. Maybe if there's a PlayStation 64 or something?

SONY PLAYSTATION MEMORY CARD

Sony PlayStation Memory Card
Manufacturer: Sony Computer Entertainment
Model: SCPH-1020
Type: Save Memory Card

An absolute necessity in the age of CDROM gaming, the memory card allows you to save your progress and custom creations for later use, as such data cannot be saved to the read-only memory of a CDROM. This 128KB capacity memory card holds up to 15 game saves, which can be copied or moved between memory cards like files on diskettes. It is recommended that you keep backups of your important save files, as you may have already experienced some butthead erasing or otherwise messing up your save games on SNES or Genesis cartridges.

SONY PLAYSTATION MULTITAP
Sony PlayStation Multitap
Manufacturer: Sony Computer Entertainment
Model: SCPH-1070
Type: Multiplayer adapter

With multiplayer sports games becoming popular for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, a four player adapter is almost a necessity. If more varied types of games can also take advantage of this multitap, then more the better! The PlayStation Multitap not only supports connecting additional controllers, but also the new memory cards. My only complaint is that the cord isn't very long, and the multitap is kind of heavy, so be sure to keep it and the PlayStation near the floor. It is an expensive and precision piece of equipment, after all.

PLAYSTATION LINK CABLE

PlayStation Link Cable
Manufacturer: Sony Computer Entertainment
Model: SCPH-1040
Type: System link cable

If you've ever used a null modem cable, then you know what you're in for. The PlayStation Link Cable allows you to play multiplayer games via linked systems, provided those games are programmed to use the link cable. Each player gets their own view, but also has to supply their own PlayStation, television, and their own copy of the game being played. This is possibly a vision of the future.

PLAYSTATION EXTENSION CABLE
PlayStation Extension Cable
Manufacturer: ?
Model: ?
Type: Extension cable

Just a simple extension cable, for those who like to sit way back, without having to move the PSX to the carpet where it could overheat or be stepped on. As always with long cords, be watchful for cross traffic that can yank your system off of its shelf, to meet its doom upon the floor.
