Hello, my name is Ataahua Tui Jane. I was born at 5:30am on Thursday 21st August.  Ataahua is the Stud name (which means Beautiful), and Im called Tui cos my Mum was called Dove, another bird, and then Jane for my late grandmother in law Susan Jane who Im told was a great horsewoman.  My Daddy is called Wrangler, and hes a purebred Quarterhorse!

My Mum Dove didnt feel too good after I was born and even though I managed to get to my feet, she couldnt get up until the vet got there and helped her. She was feeling pretty rough, but even so she talked to me and told me to have a drink so I could grow up big and strong. Later on the vet came again, cos Mum was feeling even worse but before they could get her to a hospital she fell over and couldnt get up again. The vet said she had colic when I was born and most likely twisted her gut I think she was very brave to have pushed me out and stood for all those hours to let me drink as much colostrums as I could.

Luckily my other mum Rhiannon was there and she got to work straight away getting me some more colostrum. She had to get up every 2 hours that night and boy I was glad to see her each time she arrived at the barn! Then she got me some Milk Replacer, which I didnt like too much to start with but Mum persevered and pretty quickly I decided it wasnt so bad. I even learnt to drink out of a bucket straight away! Mum said I was very clever.  After 3 weeks Mum said she needed some sleep, and didnt feed me during the night! I was pretty annoyed at first, but now I have learnt to eat my feed until she gets back at 6am in the morning. I really like having my porridge made out of Orphan Foal Mix and water, but Im not too sure about the other stuff yet!

I have my Auntie Pandora to keep me company and look after me. She is very old (40yo my Mum says!), and used to belong to my grandmother in law but she takes her job looking after me very seriously. I thought she was pretty scary at first cos shes so big! But Im learning that she wont hurt me, and she might even be good to play with soon. Pandora and I go out into the big paddock every day which is great fun cos theres so much room to run around! I can do some pretty impressive moves Mum says!

Ive learnt to have a halter on and follow Mum around the paddock I didnt like having the halter on at first, but now its not too bad. I can also pick up all my feet Im practicing for when the farrier visits next. Mum says since Im so well behaved I can learn some tricks soon!

My Mum Rhiannon was very sad when Dove died as Dove was very special to her and she even rode her down the aisle sidesaddle at her wedding and won lots of ribbons together, including Pinto Mare of the Year 2007. She says I am a splitting image of my Mum though, so I will do my best to grow up big and strong and make my Mums proud both of them.
White Dove, 1997 2008, Pinto Mare of the Year 2007.  Truly loved, and missed by all. Rest peacefully Dove, you have taken a piece of my heart with you. Rhiannon Moss
