JOHN RAWLS

"Because of the fact of reasonable pluralism, constitutional democracy must have political and social institutions that effectively lead its citizens to acquire the appropriate sense of justice as they grow up and take part in society. They will then be able to understand the principles and ideals of the political conception, to interpret and apply them to cases at hand, and they will normally be moved to act from them as circumstances require. This leads to stability for the right reasons."
(J. Rawls, The Law of Peoples)

"...The entire development of Rawls’s theory of justice as fairness presupposes this interplay of normativity between person and society, through the three viewpoints to be adopted [by the parties in the original position, citizens in a well-ordered society, and by "ourselves," all of us "who are faced with the task of settling questions of justice," i.e., concrete, flesh-and-blood humans who share values and beliefs within a given culture, including our more or less intuitive conceptions of good and sense of justice]. The reflective equilibrium mediates thus between ideal and nonideal standpoints, and carries through the procedural representations of the other devices (original position and well-ordered society) –-without reducing personhood to social roles and the like."
(N. de Oliveira, "Rawls's Normative Conception of the Person")

Nythamar de Oliveira

Undoubtedly, the most important political philosopher of the second half of the 20th century. His lasting contributions to ethical and political theory were grasped by his theory of justice as fairness, outlined in three major books (A Theory of Justice (1971), Political Liberalism (1993), and The Law of Peoples (1999), thematizing some of the most influential concepts and problems around theories of deliberative democracy, egalitarianism, universalism vs. communitarianism, political liberalism, reasonable pluralism, human rights, international law, global justice and cosmopolitanism, constructivism, utilitarianism, intuitionism, perfectionism, rational choice theories, and interdisciplinary approaches of social philosophy to economics, legal studies, social and behavioral sciences.

John Rawls Power Point Presentation
