The
CTD-carousel system is attached to a titanium armored cable from the no.2
winch of the research vessel Hakuho-maru and controlled on boardship by a
CTD desk unit connected to an IBM compatible desktop computer. The photo on
the side shows the guys on the control boards.
The
array is lowered from the ship and guided by a pinger attached to the carousel
to monitor the distance between the CTD assemblage and the sea bottom. Normally
it is lowered to a depth of about 10 meters above the bottom. Water is sampled
by triggering the samplers via the CTD deck unit at appropriate depths while
the system is upcast. (More.)
