This in-situ sampler was designed by the Challenger Oceanic Systems and services to filter over one cubic meter of water in a few hours at mid-water depths (up to 5500m) in the open ocean. The purpose is to get sufficient quantities of particulate material for the subsequent analysis of radiochemical moieties. (I hope you understood this one, *grin*)
