Nicole's Crochet Bistro
Knitting Tutorial Page!

I haven't been knitting anywhere near long enough to be able to really teach it, but I can share some great information with you! Stitchguide.com is a wonderful how-to resource for any type of needlecraft. I use it for crochet, cro-hooking, tatting, among other things, and most recently, knitting. The descriptions and diagrams they have are great, and many have videos that you can view to help you understand even better.

Please note that all of the Stitchguide links will open in a new browser so that you may reference the site while continuing to work here. This listing is only a very basic selection of knitting techniques and stitches. For others, you can try the main knitting page at Stitchguide.

Main knitting page: This is the jumping off point for the Stitchguide.com knitting section. Many stitches and techniques that I haven't listed on this page can be found here.
Casting on (co): This is also known as knitting on, or casting on with two needles. Make a slip knot on left needle. Insert tip of right needle into slip knot (loop). Knit 1 in loop. Place new stitch on left needle. Repeat until desired number of stitches are cast on.
Knit (k): This is the basic stitch! With yarn in back, insert tip of right needle in front of next stitch on left needle. Wrap yarn counter clockwise around tip of needle. Pull loop through stitch to front. Slide worked stitch off left needle.
Purl (p): This is the other stitch you will need to know! With yarn in front, insert tip of right needle from back to front through next stitch on left needle. Wrap yarn counterclockwise around needle. Pull loop through to back. Slide worked stitch off left needle.
Yarn over (yo): This type of increase forms an eyelet. If the eyelet is decorative only, and not an increase, there is usually a decrease somewhere else on the row, usually just before or after the yo. This is also known as yarn forward (yfwd) in some patterns. To do it on a knit row, bring yarn to front and over top of right needle. Knit the next stitch. To do it on a purl row, bring yarn to front and over top of right needle. Purl the next stitch.
Increase (inc): One of the many ways to increase stitches. It is also known as knitting {purling} into the front and back of a stitch. For knit: Knit into front of stitch. Before slipping stitch off needle, place right needle behind left and knit again into back of stitch. Slip original stitch off left needle. For purl: Purl into front of stitch. Before slipping stitch off needle, purl again into back of stitch. Slip original stitch off left needle.
Decrease (dec): This is also known as knit 2 together (k2tog) or purl 2 together (p2tog). In knit:Put tip of right needle through next 2 stitches from left to right. Treating these as one stitch, knit. In purl:Put tip of right needle through next 2 stitches from right to left. Treating these as one stitch, purl.
Binding off (bo): This is also known as casting off. It is usually done "in pattern", which means that you bind off knitwise on knit stitches and purlwise on purl stitches. In knit:Knit first 2 stitches on left needle. Insert tip of left needle into first stitch worked on right needle. Lift first stitch over second stitch and off needle in direction shown by arrow. Knit the next stitch and repeat. When one stitch remains on right needle, cut yarn and draw tail through last stitch to fasten off. In purl:Purl first 2 stitches on left needle. Insert tip of left needle into first stitch worked on right needle. Lift first stitch over second stitch and off needle in direction shown by arrow. Purl the next stitch and repeat. When one stitch remains on right needle, cut yarn and draw tail through last stitch to fasten off.
