Venice is one of the most unique and romantic cities in the world. The city is a combination of canals, bridges, beautiful architecture, and narrow winding cobblestone streets.
Piazza & Basilica di San Marco The Piazza is one of the most famous squares in the world, it is enclosed by the basilica, the old Law Courts and Libreria Vecchia (which houses the Archeological Museum and the Marciana Library).
The Basilica, with its elaborately decorated facade, was constructed to house the body of St. Mark. The basilica was built in the Byzantine style in the 11th century and the interior is is richly decorated with magnificent mosaics and other embellishments over the next five centuries.
Pala d'Oro - a gold altarpiece decorated with silver, enamel, and precious stones is behind the basilica's altar.
Bell Tower - climb to the top of the basilica's freestanding 99m-high tower which is in the piazza.
Palazzo Ducale - The official residence of the doges and the seat of the republic's government.

Galleria dell' Accademia - the Academy of Fine Arts contains an important collection of Venetian Art, including works by Tintoretto, Titan, and Veronese.
Collectione Peggy Guggenheim - contains the American hieress's collection of modern art and is set in a sculpture garden.
Chiesa di Santa Maria dells Salute - was built at the entrance to the Grand Canal and dedicated to the Madonna after a plague in the 17th century. It contains works by Tintoretto and Titan.
SS Giovanni e Paolo and the Frari -two great gothic churches.
The Lido - Easily accessible by vaporetto Nos 1, 6, 14 or 82, this thin strip of land, east of the centre, separates Venice from the Adriatic. It is a very popular beach resort.
Islands - The island of Murano is the home of Venetian glass. Visit the Glassworks Museum to see the evolution of the famous glassware. Burano is renound for its lace-making. Torcello has Byzantine mosaics in its cathedral, notably the stunning mosaic of the Madonna in the Apse.
Gondolas - Very expensive (around L120 000) but very romantic and a great way to experience the city. You can fit up to 6 people and prices are negotiable. |
