getting around Vienna

everybody move to the back of the bus...

U-Bahn

When you arrive, the U-bahn is the easiest way to get around.  You can buy a weekly pass for ATS 150 at any Tabak, a 24 hour student ticket for ATS 60 at the U-Bahn ticket machine, or a single use ticket for ATS 19 per zone at the U-Bahn ticket machine.  To purchase a single use ticket, press the button with the one person figure and specify the number of zones according to the diagram by the machine, then insert you money. (You will get change back from the machine).  Most likely you will be travelling just one zone.

To get into the city from the airport, the shuttle bus to Sudbahnhof and Westbahnhof is a cheap and convenient method (ATS 70).  You can also take the U-Bahn from the airport but it is more complicated and not much cheaper.  If you live at Haus Erasmus or Haus Dobling, then get off the shuttle bus at Westbahnhof.  Haus Erasmus is a 7-10 minute walk from Westbahnhof (U3, U6) and a 5 minute walk from Burgasse Stadthalle (U6).  Haus Dobling is at Hadtgasse (Tram 38) which is one stop from Nudorfer Strasse (U6) on the #38 tram.

Other frequent stops are Spittelau (U6) for the WU University, Stephansplatz (U3, U1) for the centre of the city, Schnbrunn (U4) for Schnbrunn palace and gardens, Karlsplatz (U1, U2, U4) for Karls Church and the Belvedere, and Volkstheatre (U2, U3) for numerous museums.
