Read it and weep...

Before you go, it is useful to work out a budget approximating how much you will be able to spend per month.  Try as best as you can to stick closely to the budget; however don't let it become a trap that makes you miss out on key experiences-when visiting Venice, you don't want to miss out on a gondola ride because it's not in your budget!

Below is an approximate budget for an exchange student:

Keep your identity!

The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is a universally accepted form of student identification.  You can obtain this card at your university or many travel agents in your home country.  It is extremely useful for all sorts of attractions around Europe, and will get you discounts at many places (i.e. museums, art galleries, historical sights, etc.) as well as saving you money on plane and train fares.

For more information, check it out at www.istc.org

Say cheese!

You might find it useful to have a few (say, 6-8) pictures of yourself on hand.  These are useful for things like school and residence identifications, transit passes, visas for visiting other countries (if needed) and gym memberships (if you are into that sort of thing!).  It will save you time (and shillings!) if you have them with you.
