what to eat

knock knock--who's there?  banana....

Vienna offers some of the most tasty food and drink available.  Here's how to find it!

Where to shop

The Billa is an inexpensive grocery chain that can be found just about anywhere--even in the airport for some last-minute or welcome-home shopping.  Food is relatively cheap and fresh--but don't forget to bring your own plastic bag!  You must pay (3 ATS) for any bag you use there, so save yourself the shillings and bring your own!

The Merkur is also a larger and sometimes less expensive alternative to Billa.  You will find it in larger malls and centres around town.  Not as convenient as the Billa though.

If you suddenly crave gourmet food (and have the budget to afford it!), try Julius Meinl, an upscale grocery chain.  You will recognize it by its bright yellow store front and distinctive logo (see right).

Where to eat

The best deal in town is at the Mensa (student cafeterias) in the universities.  These usually offer cheap, filling dishes like potatoes or rice, as well as a choice of grilled food (schnitzel and fries), pasta and salads for a relatively low price.  You can also choose the fixed menu, which gets you a salad, main dish, desert and drink for a fixed price (usually between 50-60 ATS)
