what to pack

roll, roll, roll your luggage...

Vienna has a moderate climate, but when it snows it can get COLD and when it is sunny, it can get HOT, so you need to be prepared for all types of weather.  Therefore, we would recommend these bare essentials:
warm clothes (for October to March)
ski clothes if you plan on taking advantage of the beauty of the alps
warm gloves and a scarf-people in Vienna are NOT shy about bundling up for cold weather and neither    should you be!
lots of t-shirts for when the weather gets warm (but not many shorts as Europeans don't wear shorts very much!)

Since you will probably be doing a lot of travelling when you are in Vienna (both inside Austria and around Europe), so it is best to bring:
"Let's Go Europe" or "Lonely Planet Europe" -good information, resources and recommendations for all your travels
 comfortable walking/hiking shoes
lots of clothing you can layer (in case it gets cold or hot!)
a large backpack that can hold enough for  weekend (or sometimes longer) trips
 sleeping bag & pillow (optional)
sleep sac (ESSENTIAL if you are staying in a hostel!) -you can find these at any camping store or your local hostel, if not, you can make one easily by buying a double sheet and sewing it closed to look like a sleeping bag
padlock (again, ESSENTIAL if you will be staying in hostels for longer than one day)

If you will be living in student residence, then you should probably pack these essentials:
pillow (some may provide a pillow, but do you really want to use it??)
 sheets (again, see above)
 towels
dishes/cutlery (best if you bring plastic-you know what your luggage goes through!)
also, you may be able to purchase it in Vienna, but it is a rather large inconvenience during the first few days!
sharp knife, bottle opener, small scissors, nail file (or you could save yourself some hassle and space and get a Swiss Army Knife!)
