Salzburg, Austria

3 hours, one train every hour, ATS 410 one way

Salzburg is the birthplace of Motzart and the backdrop for the Sound of Music, so you will notice that the influence of Motzart is everywhere.

Festung Hohensalzb
urg - Guided tour (ATS 84) of the castle torture chambers, state rooms, the tower (excellent view of the Alps), state rooms, the tower and two museums.

The
Dom (Domplatz) has three bronze doors symbolizing faith hope and charity.

St. Peter's Ab
bey- the interesting graveyard is surrounded by the cliffs and contains the catacombs in the side of the cliff

Collegiate Chu
rch (Universitatsplatz) - great example of Baroque architecture with cherubs and clouds above the altar.

Schloss Mirabell
- the beautiful gardens were featured in The Sound of Music.

Museum of Natural History (Museumsplatz 5) - Floral, fauna, and mineral displays; physics and astronomy exhibits; tropical fish and a reptile house; and a deformed animal exhibit.

Reside
nz (Residenplatz 1) - Baroque state rooms of the archbishop's palace (by guided tour only).

Rupertin
ium (Weiner Philharmonic Gasse 9) - 20th Century works of art and temporary exhibits.

Mausoleum of Wolf Dietri
ch - located in the graveyard of the 16th Century St. Sebastian Church on Linzer Gasse.  This museum has some interesting epitaphs.

The Sound of Music T
our - Bus tour leaves from Mirabellplatz, lasts 3-4 hours and costs about ATS 350. See the Hostelling International Jugendgastehaus for the cheapest tour.

Prague, Czech Republic

5hours, four trains per day, ATS 488 one way

The only central Europe city left entirely unscathed by either natural disaster or WWII, central Prague is a well-preserved combination of labyrinth alleys and Baroque buildings.

NOVE MESTRO (New part of Town.)
Wenceslas Square - In front of the National Museum.  The square sweeps past department stores, overpriced discos, posh hotels, sausage stands, and trashy casinos.

STARE MESTRO (Old part of Town )
Old Town Square - Old Town Hall is the multi-facaded building with a bit blown off the front.
The Astronomical Clock chimes with its procession of apostles, a skeleton, and a thwarted Turk.
Tyn Church - its spires rise above a mass of medieval houses.
Goltz-Kinsky Palace
- the finest of Prague's Rococo buildings.

Charles Bridge - Prague's most recognizable landmark packed with people and vendors.

JOSEFOV
Historic Jewish neighbourhood and the oldest Jewish Settlement in Europe. Josefov lies north of Starometsske nam., along Maiselova and several sidestreets.

The Synagogues
Maisel Synagogue
- treasure exhibits from the extensive collections of the Jewish museum.
Pinkas Synagogue - memorial to the 77, 000 Czech Jews killed in the Holocaust.
Old-New Synagogue - the oldest operating synagogue in Europe.
Spanish Synagogue -  Ornate Moorish interior.

Old Jewish Cemetery and Ceremony Hall - Josefov's most popular attraction, the 12,000 graves were laid in 12 layers.

MALA STRANA
Centered around Malostranske nam. and it's centerpiece, the Baroque St. Nicholas' Cathedral, whose towering dome is one of Prague's most notable landmarks.
Wallenstein Garden (Letenska 10) can be reached through a wooden gate on a 10 meter wall along Letenska.

PRAGUE CASTLE
It has been the seat of the Bohemian Government and the center of its politics  for 1000 years.

St. Vitus' Cathedral - magnificent stained glass windows, 287 steps up the tower for a great city view.
Old Royal Palace - houses the expanse of the Vladislav Hall, which once hosted jousting competitions.
St.George's Bascilica - Adjacent convent houses the National Gallery of Bohemian Art with art ranging from Gothic to Baroque.
