MST no longer to pay compensation

Aizawl Sept 23 : The Mizoram State Transport will longer entertain compensation claims from passengers and relatives of passengers who had been involved in accidents of MST buses, a government press release said today.

Citing the reason for this, the government release said while compensations upto 3 lakhs, depending on the availability of funds, used to be paid through compensation claims and the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal directives prior to 2000 by the Transport department, any claims will now be paid by insurance companies as the department has insured all its vehicles with these companies.

Explaining the payment of Rs 1000 each to relatives of those who lost their lives and Rs 500 each to those sustaining injuries in the recent MST bus accident in southern Mizoram, the government said these were not compensations and were only the Mizo tradition of condolence given by the department the passengers of its bus.



AR jawan commits suicide

Aizawl Sept 23: An Assam Rifles jawan, YP Reky, a Manipur Nepali, committed suicide 3.30 pm this morning while on guard duty.

According to his commander, Major Mann of the Assam Rifles, the man was besetted with domestic problems which he felt was out of his control. "Having the means to do it, and failing to reconcile with his problems, he shot himself in the chest with his SLR while he was on duty," Major Mann told Newslink.

Leaving behind a note to the AR DIG, Reky wrote he was taking his own life and no one else was to be blamed for it. "Please look after my family and relatives," he wrote according to the major.

His body has been sent to Silchar after a post mortem at the Aizawl Civil Hospital and will be flown to Imphal Tuesday.



Excise seize heroin

Aizawl Sept 23: The Mizoram Excise Anti-Narcotics Cell today seized 20 grams of heroin at Peter's Street Khatla.

Lalthsanga, 25, s/o Sangnunkhuma, N Chaltlang, currently residing in Zarkawt and Hmingthantluanga, 23, s/o Lalthanliana, Champhai College Veng, currently residing in Armed Veng, have been arrested in this connection.

Local gossip have it that heroin is on the rise in the city with more and more heroin addicts adding to the drug problem. The main drug used by drug abusers, proxyvon, although still plenty, is slowly being replaced by the more expensive and hard-hitting heroin and cocaine, according to sources.



Congress wants a clean, transparent VC election

Aizawl Sept 23: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee has asked for a clean and transparent Village Council elections while thanking the Mizoram government for announcing the elections in due time.

"The MPCC wants the MNF government led by Pu Zoramthanga to hold a free and fair election unlike the 1999 VC elections in which development funds were thrown away without purpose," the Congress said in a press release issued today.

The Congress said if the elections are clean and transparent, without being encumbered with money temptations, they are sure of getting the majority of VC seats.
