Second phase of polling in J&K on Tuesday


Election officials arrive for duty Srinagar Sept 23 : Amid stepped up violence aimed at sabotaging the elections and heightened security, Jammu and Kashmir will go to the polls on Tuesday in the second phase of elections covering 28 Assembly constituencies in the valley and the plains.

In all 15 seats in the valley including those in capital Srinagar and 13 in Jammu city and neighbouring areas will go to the polls to decide the fate of 263 candidates, including NC President Omar Abdullah.

A batch of 15 diplomats from the US, Britain, European Commission, France, Sweden, Australia, Greece, the Netherlands, Japan, Germany and Canada have reached here to witness the elections.

Apparently upset over a good turn out in the first phase on September 16, militants intensified violence ahead of Tuesday's polling targeting political activists killing nearly a dozen of them belonging to the National Conference, the CPM and the People's Democratic Party.

Tourism Minister Sakina Itoo, contesting from Noorabad seat, was targeted thrice last week when she stepped out to campaign. However, in all the three attempts on her life the minister escaped unhurt.

Security has been beefed up with personnel taking up positions at the 2,099 polling stations for an electorate of 21,90,953.

Meanwhile at least eight persons were injured when militants attacked a campaign vehicle of People's Democratic Party at Sangam in Anantnag district of south Kashmir this afternoon, official sources said.

Militants hurled the grenade on the PDP vehicle on Mai road which exploded causing injuries to pedestrains, the sources said.

However, the PDP activists escaped unhurt as the device rebounded after hitting the vehicle and fell on the road.

The injured where hospitalised where condition of three of them was stated to be serious.

In another eruption violence, a gunfight broke out between militants and security forces at Wacharnag in Soura in the outskirts of Srinagar this afternoon.

Heavy firing was going on from both sides, the sources added.
