Suspected Kuki rebels release abducted Mizo couple

align= Aizawl Oct 08:A Mizo couple, Doliana and his wife Malsawmi, residents of Churanchandpur, Manipur, have both been released without harm by suspected Kuki rebels Monday.

The couple were abducted Saturday last from their home at Churachandpur at gunpoint around 10 in the forenoon. However, the husband, Doliana was released on Sunday morning to get the ransom money of Rs 20 lakhs set by the abductors.

On receiving information of the abduction, the Churanchandpur Mizo People Convention (not to be confused with the political party Mizoram People's Conference) and the Manipur YMA group immediately began negotiations with the abductors.

The negotiators managed to talk the abductors into releasing their hostage, Malsawmi, on Monday after which she was released unharmed.

However, the abductors have not waived their ransom demand and they are reportedly asking that it be paid in the near future.

In insurgency ridden Manipur, this is reported to be the first abduction of Mizos and it has greatly alarmed the more than 20,000 Mizo residents of Manipur.

The Kuki rebels have broken into two factions sometime back called the Kuki National Front (KNF) and the Kuki National Organisation (KNO).

In turn, several splinter groups have emerged from these two factions, each faction and group going their own way.

Reports reaching Newslink said it is most probable that the abductors are from the small splinter groups and not the bigger two factions.
