CYMA president against family planning; slams Forest officials
Aizawl Oct 06:Central YMA president Lianzuala said all healthy individuals that can bear children should do so to safeguard the land and its people.
Speaking at the first seminar of the Central YMA Science & Environment Committee Saturday, the Central YMA president said, "We are aware of the need to safeguard ourselves from assimilation as the Mizos are very small in number compared to non-tribals in other states. At a time when we need to safeguard our traditions, our land and oursevles from being overrun by more advanced culture and society, the Mizo society cannot afford family plannings as envisaged in general for the whole of the country.
"As such, we need to be numerous and in order to do this, every healthy individual capable of bearing or siring children should not be advised against it."
Talking of the need to obtain real improvements for the conservation and protection of the environment, Lianzuala slammed the Forest & Environment officials and said the real work of environment protection should emanate from them.
"We know that the most devastation done to forests is through fire, which is seen in Mizoram every year from the burning of jhums. However, officials utilise the funds meant for fire control for other purposes resulting in deforestation through fire every single year.
"If Forest officials did not use the funds meant for fire protection for other purposes, a huge area of the forest can be preserved every year," the CYMA president said in a thinly veiled accusation of corruption by Forest department officials.
Lianzuala was also of the opinion that the letting out of fish in the rivers is of little use to populate the riverine wildlife.
"We have seen little of the fish that are let out into the rivers every year by the Fisheries department. In my opinion, this is a wrong approach to the conservation and preservation of riverine wildlife. What needs to be done instead is to protect the fishes that come to lay eggs. The habit of catching these fishes which swarm to lay their eggs has greatly reduced their numbers in the state's rivers," he said.
Another speaker at the seminar, Dr Tawnenga, said enviroment is a word that emcompasses a wide range of things such as forests, wildlife, water, air etc and streesed the need to protect them.
"As important as development is, the protection of our environment is more important as our very lives depend on the fullness of our environment. As such, when development works are being carried out, we must be careful not to harm the environment or to harm the environment as little as possible," he said.
