MCACS conduct HIV/AIDS training for journalists
Aizawl Oct 03:The Mizoram state AIDS Control society organised HIV/AIDS training was held today at the Aizawl Press Club attended by a good number of journalists.
The training, inaugurated by Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Rochila Saiawi was divided into three topics with different resource persons for each topic.
The first topic, Blood Banks, Blood Donors and Blood tranfusions was taken up by Dr. K.Ropari, Dy, Director, SACS, the second topic blade and transmission of HIV/AIDS - Global, National, and State level was taken up by Dr. F.Lalhmingthanga while the third topic of Clinical Spectrum, Diagnosis and Management of HIV/AIDS, STD and TB was taken up by Dr. Lalbiakkima of SPRAM.
The MSACS, giving a report of their action towards propagating awareness of HIV/AIDS, said they have put up many signboards as possible within the state, have given numerous training on HIV/AIDS and distributed condoms to passenger vehicles such as buses and taxis.
According to the MSCAS report 68,256 blood samples have been received uptil date with 366 coming out positive with HIV.
28 cases of AIDS have been registered by the Health department while 17 have succumbed to it.
Of the 28 AIDS cases, half were males and half females. Of the deaths from AIDS, 11 were males while 6 were females.
The MSACS stressed that discrimination should not be shown to AIDS patients as this can greatly aggravate their condition.
More abductors arrested
Aizawl Oct 03:According to Aizawl police, the Meghalaya police have arrested more persons involved in the abduction of K Lalengzama and others in the fag end of August.
The two persons the police have arrested are Abdul Majid and a female accomplice, Tozi Bibi.
According to the police, the abductors had taken Lalengzama and the other six non-Mizos they had abducted earlier, to the home of Tozi Bibi.
The Meghalaya police have requested K Lalengzama and his fellow passengers to come to Jowai to identify these two persons on August 10, 2002.
Lalengzama, who had volunteered to be abducted when the criminals asked for a hostage for ransom, have been recommended by the Central YMA to receive a national bravery award.
Cash consolations for victims of wildlife
Aizawl Oct 03:The Mizoram government Environment & Forest department have drawn up plans to compensate victims of wildlife who had met with accidents outside wildlife sanctuaries.
Inaugurating the 48th Wildlife Week today at the Aijal Club, Forest minister Lalchamliana said the government cannot give compensations to victims of wildlife inside the sanctuaries. However, should these accidents happen outside the sanctuaries' perimetres, compensations of upto Rs 1 lakhs can be given to those who lose their lives because of wildlife attack as well as those who are crippled through these attacks.
Compensation can also be claimed for rice and other crops that had been destroyed by wildlife at Rs 2000 a hectare.
The minister said the protection of wildlife cannot be left to the sole responsibility of the 800 or so workers in this field and the people must help in this regard.
Condemning hunters, Lalchamliana said the department should not be lenient with them. Even if they are officers or politicians, the department should take steps to initiate proceedings against them.
Vanhela Pachuau, E & F Secretary, also slammed the Forest department officers saying there have been complaints from YMA leaders that the department is difficult to work with because of some of the officers' practice of withholding of funds.
He urged the departmental officers to make available all necesssary funds for making people aware of the need to protect wildlife.
Blood Donation Day observed
Aizawl Oct 01:The National Blood Donation Day was observed today under the aegis of the Association for Voluntary Blood Donation, Aizawl at a fuunction at the Aizawl Civil Hospital.
F Malsawma, Health minister, who attended this function said Mizoram had always been among the best implementors of any central health programme and we should make efforts to remain so and to be the leader in this area in view of our status as an educated state and of our being a Christian state.
Speaking on the usefulness of blood donations, the minister said giving blood is not harmful to the giver, rather it is harmful for the receiver oweing to the many diseases that could be contracted from contaminated blood.
Talking of the blood donation programme in the state, the minister said, "In view of the fact that there are no proper records, the actual number of blood given through donations cannot be ascertained. However, it is my belief that the willingness shown by the Mizo people in donating blood, we have surpassed the Cente�s target of 40% of blood through donors."
