Lagerstroemia - In-Vitro Clonal Propagation
of from Mature Trees
By John Paily
Lagerstroemia is
woody tree valued for its timber. It is reported to have use in ship
building, making of railway sleepers, bridges and furniture. It
extensively used in landscaping and road side tree because of it beautiful
flowers.
Normally tissue
culture experiments are attempted with seed derived explants because its
juvenile state is readily amenable for differentiation. Here the work was
taken up with explants taken from mature and flowering tree. Here axillary
buds were used for culturing. Multiple shoots were induced in culture and
were separated, rooted independently and transferred to soil. See photos

Initially it along
with cashew formed my thesis work. But it was deleted from thesis and in
its place coconut was introduced. The work with cashew that was initiated
by the author 1982 and the promising results led to sanctioning of huge
funds to the lab from the Government of India also is published in
international journals from the lab. However it does not carry any
credence to me.
