The Red Saddlebags has a dark red band in the base of each hindwing which is often thinner at the middle. The male's thorax is brown and its abdomen is reddish brown. The female's wing band is smaller than the male's and she is browner all over. Abdominal segments 8 and 9 on both sexes have dark spots on top. This species migrates.

Size: 41-49 mm (1.6-1.9 in)

Habitat: ponds, lakes and slow streams

Great Plains Range: TX, OK, KS, NE, SD, NM, CO, MO, IA, MN

Flight season: May to October
