The Dot-tailed Whiteface is a small black dragonfly with a yellow spot on the top of abdominal segment 7 and a white face. Sexes are similar, although the female has pale yellow spots on the tops of more abdominal segments. They often perch on floating vegetation.

Habitat: ponds, lakes and slow streams

Great Plains Range: KS, NE, SD, ND, CO, WY, MT, MO, IA, MN

Flight season: May to August
