New Directions has a positive debut

Gulf Coast Community Care's New Directions Program, a "Back to Work" project designed to assist HIV positive/PWAs who express an interest in returning to the work force, made its debut in July 1998. It is one of only five such programs in the entire country. The project is funded under a grant from the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services and ABLE Trust. A look at early results indicate it is a success.

The project has received more than 60 referrals, and more than 30 people have enrolled in the 13-week study cycles. Of the three cycles completed, seven people have been placed in jobs, and three have been placed in schools for further training. Cycles are continually running, and seven people are current candidates for job placement.

The project focuses on ways to help students learn how to return to the workplace without losing benefits, refresher job interview techniques, job "social skills," lawful and unlawful questions an interviewer can ask, and job goal setting. The program also has an extensive computer training segment in which students are taught Windows 95; typing skills; the Internet; Office 97 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access), and are taught how to design their personal Web Pages.

Recruitment is constant, with continuing successful outreach efforts to churches, other agencies, community centers, schools, and hospitals. Outreach has also expanded to include Public Health agencies and the Department of Corrections. A continuing, concentrated effort is being made to recruit more minorities and females.
