Finding hope at New Directions

By a New Directions Program student

I never knew that one day I would wake up and feel almost hopeless about my life and what tomorrow may bring. But it happened.

I spoke with my case worker and explained my feelings and deeply hoped there would be some answers. She told me of a program that was part of Gulf Coast Community Care that was tailored for people in my situation. It is called New Directions.

With the help of Nat Herring, who is a counselor, and Joe Wisinski, who is a computer instructor, and Barbara Ross, director of the program, things started changing. I am now going to continue my education and support myself in the computer field. That is the goal I have since finding New Directions.

The New Directions program is not necessarily about the computer field. Its more about becoming computer literate while receiving counseling about returning to work, which is a major concern of the disabled community. Clients of New Directions also receive counseling about rights with the Social Security Administration and HRS.

If you are HIV positive or a PWA, do yourself a favor and contact Gulf Coast Community Care. Youll find caring people who will help you with all aspects of dealing with life.

And be sure to ask about the New Directions Program.
