Rules and Setting Questions and Answers

These are frequent questions and answers related to the rules and setting. They are not rulings and are not modifications to rules, but offer insights into a consistant basis for interpetation of the World of Darkness for this region. Most of these have been made with consultation with our NST and the other RST's. Others are commentary on mis-read rules which make for frequent questions.

A majority of these are taken from answers in the RST report to questions from CST's and DST's.

Garou

Can I purchase intermediate or advanced gifts with negative traits?
In Laws of the Wild, it gives the specific list of what can be purchased with negative traits. Neither Prime 5.1, nor Garou 5.0 modify that. Intermediate and advanced gifts are not on the list, only basic gifts are on the list. Not allowed.

What rules should I use to create a kinfolk or a kinfolk retainer?
For a kinfolk - NPC's, retainers or PC's - all use the same rules. Use Mortals 5.0, Prime 5.1, Laws of the Hunt. Use Laws of the Wild and Laws of the Hunt Players Guide for supplemental material. For retainers, keep in mind that the retainer rules in Prime apply.

If I have a merit that duplicates a Garou tribal advantage, but the character is that tribe to begin with, is it still High approval? (Example: Shadowlord taking Mental Outmaneuver.)
Garou 5.0 states that any merit that duplicates a tribal advantage is High approval. There is no mention of a tribal restriction.

If a member of pack devotes his Totem background and xp to the totem, and then leaves, what happens to the Totem?
The xp devoted stays with the totem. The Totem background goes with the character (whether the charater leaves or dies, etc.) Based on wording in the LotW, I would say that xp could pay for the base totem cost as well.

Can I make a NPC Elder or Athro Garou dependent on chronicle length even though it would be beyond MC as a starting character?
As described in Prime, that would be beyond MC and takes High approval for a NPC.

Do we use the rules for Totem spirit upgrades (Gaffling to Jaffling, etc.) or Garou 5.0/5.1 rules that state that totem spirits are Jafflings.
I'd say that Garou 5.x supercedes and follow that. Totems are Jafflings and don't change spirit type.

Should kinfolk with gnosis suffer from carrying silver like garou? Can they cross the gauntlet?
Kinfolk don't have the vulnerability to silver that Garou do. I'd say no. The merit gives them only the ability to have gnosis, and not any of the other ads and disads that a garou has.

If I have Blissful Ignorance enabled, can I step on a landmine without it going off?
I'd say no. Now, if that landmine was connected to a motion sensor or a camera, and only went off when the mortion sensor goes off, then sure.

Is special approval/notification required for Hakken Shadowlords?
Hakken is really a different venue (but limited contact with the rest of the Shadowlords.) Kind of like Cam Nos and Sabbat Nos. It is going to be at least High approval.
