Self-Advocacy

An increasing number of homeschoolers are concerned about protecting our homeschooling rights in North Carolina. We're aware that the legislators who were in office when our current homeschooling law was passed, are not the same legislators who are in office now. It appears that education may be a strong political focus in the upcoming election. Some homeschooling advocates feel that this increased focus on homeschooling has led to increasing legislative actions and restrictions in other states. While not being alarmists, we realize that, as with handling any potential threat, the key is preparedness through education.

Check Out "Legislative Tips for the Homeschool Family," and to learn more, an email list has been created to assist those who wish to network concerning legislative issues relating to homeschooling in North Carolina.

  • Educationese/Eduspeak, what is it?
Educationese- {or Teacherese} is the name sometimes given to the jargon too frequently employed by some of those who train our schoolteachers. It is characterized typically by its humorlessly abstract, Latinate, and polysyllabic diction and its involuted, rambling, and frequently passive syntax. Its fights are never fights and rarely even quarrels; they're conflict situations. At its worst, instead of correcting imprecision and ignorance, it tries to conceal them, frequently even from itself.

  • The Wild and Free Pigs of the Okefenokee Swamp
The Price of Free Corn - The allegory of the pigs has a serious moral lesson. This story is about federal money being used to bait, trap and enslave a once free and independent people. Federal welfare, in its myriad forms, has reduced not only individuals to a state of dependency. State and local governments are also on the fast track to elimination, due to their functions being subverted by the command and control structures of federal "revenue sharing" programs.
