| Like Pretty much everything else, I have an opinion about art. I love so many different kinds of art... And this section of my site is dedicated to discussion. I will highlight one piece of art as it comes to my attention, and give a brief commentary on it. | ||||||||||||||
| This statue, called "The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves" is a monument in the American Cemetary in Normandy, France. It is dedicated to the 17-19 year old men who gave their lives defending our freedom. The 22 foot statue was sculpted by Donald De Lue. It is setting inside a semi-circle monument that has the following words inscribed on it: "This embattled shore, portal of freedom, is forever hallowed by the ideals, the valor and the sacrifices of our fellow countrymen." When I was in Normandy, this statue was one of the | ||||||||||||||
| most touching things I saw. To stand there, and see the spirit of people my age who died for me, and then turn and see the beaches, and finally, 9,386 white crosses... There are truly no words to describe the experience. When you see it in person, the statue seems to be alive. It seems that a Greek god has just jumped out of the ocean, and been frozen forever. At the base are inscribed the words "Mine eyes have seen the glory." When I saw Normandy, and was back on American soil, I realized truly, what all of these men have fought and died for, and I realized, their battle is still being fought today. | ||||||||||||||
