After what has been an extremely tiring time at work, Steve and I decided to take a break from reality and travel to Guatemala.
Once there, we became green-bellied avocado eaters while I practiced my Spanglish. It amazed me how a seven hour flight was able to take us to volcanos, stunning lakes and Mayan
ruins surrounded by tucans and monkeys. While one week was certainly short, we got a thorough view of this small intriguing country. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone
looking for a scenic vacation.

With all these beautiful volcanos surrounding us, Steve and I couldn't help but go hike up one.
The photo above was taken at sunrise from the foot of the Acatenango volcano. The volcano you see is Fuego.
Later in the day we were looking down on that mighty beast.

The hike up was steep the entire way, making our journey difficult. Add to that the lack of oxygen
which one finds at such high altitude and soon enough you find two sorry souls having to take breaks
after every few steps of ascent.

Standing tall at 3970 meters, we were delighted to have made it up (that's about 12,000 feet for those
of you who are meterically challenged).

The view from the top was supposed to reward us with views of 12 volcanos. Instead we got a whole lot of white
stuff. What you can't see here was the incredible rumbling and roaring of Fuego (that small heap you see amidst the white)
which sounded like it might erupt at any moment.
