Fusions happened during the end of DBZ. They're basically when two warriors come together to become one that's stronger than both put together.
There are three types of fusions, they are:
Namek Fusion:
When two Nameks touch each other with UTMOST concentration. They fuse together to become...a super namek. This is permanent.
Fusion Dance:
This is when two warriors, of same race, power level, and size fuse together, This is very powerful, but if used improperly, it may result in a stupid, fat and slow warrior, with very little fighting ability (as Trunks and Goten learned the hard way). This is a temporary fusion, only standing for 30 mins.
Potara Earings:
Unlike the dance, the earings can work for any two warriors. It works with the two people wearing magical earings on opposite ears. They then run into eachother, fusing into a mega fighter. But this is permanent.
