INTRODUCTION

Malaysian scholarship in the United Kingdom (especially through Malaysian postgraduate students here) has been significant in enriching Malaysian understanding of Islam and its civilisation. The University of Wales, Lampeter (and especially its Department of Theology, Religious, and Islamic Studies) is symbolic of this enriched understanding. It has become a new centre of attraction for Malaysian academicians wishing to further their study in the West. Under official “Islam Hadhari” (Civilisational Islam) policy, which puts great emphasis on deepening knowledge, this conference will thus act as a platform for Malaysian researchers speaking on varied aspects of Islam. In this sense, the conference acts as evidence of the intensifying dialogue between Malaysia and the United Kingdom, and highlights Lampeter as a new centre for the study of Islam.

CONFERENCE AIMS

  1. To create a platform for Malaysian academicians especially in the United Kingdom and from Malaysia to present their current study related to Islam.

  2. To present a multireligious and multicultural model of Malaysian "Islam Hadhari" (Civilisational Islam) policy to the Western audiences.

  3. To present University of Wales, Lampeter, and its Department of Theology, Religious, and Islamic Studies as a new centre for Malaysian scholars on Islam wishing to do research in the United Kingdom.

  4. To create an intellectual link between researchers on Islam in Malaysia and the United Kingdom.
