INTRODUCTION
Malaysian scholarship in the
United Kingdom (especially through Malaysian postgraduate students here) has
been significant in enriching Malaysian understanding of Islam and its
civilisation. The University of Wales, Lampeter (and especially its Department
of Theology, Religious, and Islamic Studies) is symbolic of this enriched
understanding. It has become a new centre of attraction for Malaysian
academicians wishing to further their study in the West. Under official “Islam Hadhari” (Civilisational Islam) policy, which puts great emphasis on deepening
knowledge, this conference will thus act as a platform for Malaysian researchers
speaking on varied aspects of Islam. In this sense, the conference acts as
evidence of the intensifying dialogue between Malaysia and the United Kingdom,
and highlights Lampeter as a new centre for the study of Islam.
