String Instruments
The term "Stringed instruments" used to apply to all instruments with strings - that is - instruments with lengths of wire or gut which use these to produce sound. These would include the guitar, harp, lute, and mandolin as well as the violin family. Nowadays, the term "string instrument" tends to refer to the four members of the violin family, which are the Violin, Viola, 'Cello and Double bass.

There are a number of ways that one can produce sounds on a string instrument. The most common and widely known method is with the bow (con arco) which is a slightly arched wooden stick with horsehair attached to it. This bow is drawn across the strings to vibrate them and produce the note. Another way to produce a note is to pluck the string (pizzacato) which produces a totally different sound.
