The largest stringed instrument in the conventional orchestra, the double bass is often classed as one of the foundations of it. It differs in shape from the rest of the stringed instruments, with its sloping shoulders. Music is written an octave higher than it is actually written to avoid the use of constant leger lines.
Modern Double Basses can have either four of five strings. With 4 strings, they are tuned to the E below the bass clef, A, D and G. Five stringed double basses tune to the C below the bass clef, E, A, D and G. |
