Abstract letter from Ruth on the Mundy Family Forum:  His father could have been named John. In the History of Louisa County a John Munday was listed from that county as being in the French & Indian War and Rev. Woods lists a John as being a member of the Ivy Creek Church in 1747

Some sources in the Dowell family claim that this is Mildred Dowell also known as Sukey (possible middle name Lucy?) Others claim that Mildred was the first wife and that all the children are hers. One person in this family identifies Lucy as Lucy Collins (possibly dau of James Collins and Elizabeth Wylie being born in 1742?) and the second wife. One Dowell family source names Samuel's wife as Lucy Dowell, daughter of John Dowell and Christian Monroe. Another Dowell family source names his wife as Mildred Dowell the daughter of John Dowell and Mary Major. There are also differences in the number and names of the children but with duplication of many. Possibly just a confusion over which wife bore which child as no marriage diate is given for either and only a death date of after 1760 for Christian.

Ruth Lindsey wrote that Samuel names his wife, Lucy, as his executrix in his will.  Doug Chaffey wrote the following:

[email protected], letter dated 12/17/2000. "Hello, Lois. You touch on one of those uncertainties that I decided to incorporate into my family file. My best source of information on our common ancestor came from Ruth Lindsay, who lives in Albemarle County, and is descended from the same common ancestor, Samuel Munday. John Dowell, Mildred and Lucy's father, left a substantial bequest to Samuel Munday in his will, and he is mentioned in a section of the will that gives a very similiar bequest to Robert Grinner, who we know was a son-in-law (Sarah's husband). He also gives bequests to his daughters: Sarah Grinner, Mary Lankford, Sukey
(Lucy's nickname), and finally to Milley Dowell. This last one is interesting, because she was apparently still unmarried when he died. Unfortunately, Sukey's last name is not contained in the will.

From all of this, I more or less am intuiting that Sukey, or Lucy, was married to Samuel, and that is about all we may ever know for sure. Ruth says the will is very difficult to read, which creates a further difficulty. Ruth's email address is as follows: [email protected]. She may have further information for you. The name Collins must have come from somewhere, and perhaps there was indeed a second marriage. But I am guessing that the
first was to Lucy and not to Mildred.

I'd be happy to receive any information you want to send to me.

Doug Chaffey."

Therefore I am assuming that Lucy is the daughter of John Dowell.

BIOGRAPHY: John was one of the pioneers who broke virgin soil in Albemarle County.  History of Albemarle County shows that John took 400 acres from the government in 1738, about eight years after the county opened for settlement. By 1759 he had more than 1,000 acres on Priddy's Creek. One of John's neighbors in Albemarle Co was one of our founding fathers Thomas Jefferson.

John Burrus, born abt 1760, married Mary/Mollie Harris 1789 in Louisa Co., VA. Who were her parents? It is possible that Mary is the daughter of Overton Harris and Ann Nelson whose daughter Mary (Molly) was born est 1769. Overton Harris' sister, Martha, had married Jacob Burruss, Jr., brother of Henry Burruss. Therefore, Martha Harris Burruss was the aunt of Mary Harris and by marriage the aunt of John Burruss. This connection also makes sense in that John and Mary name one son Overton and one daughter Ann. THe one thing I have a question on is that the Principal buyer at her estate sale in 1842 was a Thomas Harris, and who is this and how does he fit into the family. More research is needed to prove/diprove this connection.
