CULTURAL
Cultural organizations are those that focus their energies primarily on one or more specific cultures. In the U.S. especially since the 1970s, organizations have been founded to cater to Latina, Asian, South-Asian, Indian, African-American and other cultures. Some organizations have been founded to solidify bonds between one or more cultures, for example, a sorority that offers membership to Latina and African-American women.
Many cultural sororities exist today, the greatest number of which exist for the purpose of uplifting Latina women. Cultural sororities can be distinguished by their membership, events, traditions and missions.
Cultural sorority membership will be predominantly and/or historically composed of one or more specific cultures. Events will be designed to impact and attract members of that or those specific cultures. Traditions and missions follow the historical thrusts of each cultural organization.
In defining cultural sororities, it must be noted that a sorority may be cultural or multicultural, but not both.
CULTURAL SORORITY TERMS:
1. multicultural membership
Multicultural membership refers to the diversity within the sorority's membership itself. Cultural organizations use this term in one of two ways. Either the term refers to the diversity within one overarching culture (ex: Latina "culture" includes women of Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, etc. descent) OR the term refers to a membership that has drastically diverged from its historical cultural ties and has become closer to multicultural.
