A Simple Guide to Understanding Multicultural Sororities of the United States
Diverse Cultural Multicultural Range Councils Cross-overs Sororities
CROSS-OVERS
A few cultural sororities have begun defining themselves as multicultural. These organizations have every right to be called what they prefer. Sometimes, unfortunately, uninformed people become very confused. Some cross-over sororities were founded as "multicultural" indicating their desire for a diverse membership, even though they focus on one or more cultures. Other cross-over sororities were founded as cultural organizations, but have begun to call themselves multicultural for reasons that are private to the members. These sororities should likely reside in a category all their own as they are neither fully cultural or fully multicultural.
As an example, two strong cross-over sororities are Mu Sigma Upsilon and Sigma Lambda Gamma.
Mu Sigma Upsilon (1981) was founded as the first "Multicultural Minority Greek Sorority" according to its website. The MSU motto, traditions and history reflect as strong connection to Latina culture. In fact, MSU is bound to Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity.
Sigma Lambda Gamma (1990) was founded by Latina women to "explore the richness in the traditions of Latina culture" according to its website. Today, some SLG chapters identify themselves as Latina while others identify themselves as multicultural.
