Process
BEFORE THE WEBQUEST
- It is assumed that students have not had any experience with
website evaluation.
- Before completing this webquest, the teacher should model a
website evaluation for the students. They should also be given
some guided practice, such as all students evaluating one website that
the teacher has selected.
TEACHER BACKGROUND
- The Evaluation sheets have been designed so that a teacher
with no experience in website evaluation will know how to
proceed. Links to the evaluation sheets are contained in the Student Process section of the webquest.
GROUPING
- The
webquest is designed for groups of 6 so that the 3 evaluation tasks can
be divided evenly. However the 3 evaluation tasks do not have to
be carried out separately. Smaller groups or even individuals can
complete the website evaluations without dividing up the 3 evaluation
forms.
- I thought about rotating the three evaluation tasks
among the pairings in each group, but then decided I would like each
pair to gain a depth of experience in one facet of evaluation so that
they could become experts in that facet.
TIMELINE
Assume 45-50
minute periods per day. Adjust for block scheduling or other individual
circumstances.
- Modeling and guided practice in Website Evaluation - 1
day
- Webbie Award Webquest Step 1and 2 - 2 days
- Webbie Award Webquest Steps 3 and 4 - 1 day
- Webbie Awards Ceremony - 1 day
VARIATIONS
- Students repeat the webquest, but are assigned a new
category and a new evaluation role. For example, if they have already
evaluated the Authority of the Civil War sites, they can next
evaluate the Content of the Holocaust sites.
- New categories of websites can be created by the teacher
based on curriculum topics or student interests..
- Students independently choose a topic of interest and
evaluate a series of websites.
