Our youth hostel was Festung Ehrenbreitstein.  Yes, that's the huge fortress at the top of the mountain.  The hike was 18% grade with our backbacks wanting to pull us down the hill.  The view was worth it!

Sidewalk silliness -
it happened to us.
Marianne had 7 roommates and Doug had 11 at this thick-walled fortress/hostel.  The hike down was much easier than the hike up!  The the city had fun sculptures - on the left is the town goof-off.  He teased everyone and became famous for it.  Here he spits at unsuspecting passers-by.

The fountain below details the history of the city of Koblenz.
We met up with Marianne's friendThomas to begin our ship ride up the River Rhein.  Before boarding we had to pose at the famous Deutsches Eck, where the Mosel meets up with the Rhein (the view above from our fortress shows this well).  We then began our 6 hour ride. (CAUTION - lots of pictures of old buidlings)
A little rain did not deter our progress, and soon we were getting sun tans!

We saw many quaint villages and even more vineyards.  Some buildings were ruins while others were imaculately restored.
Talk about dysfunctional family - these brothers lived a little too close to eachother and never got along.
We played card games as long as possible and then went a bit crazy after being on a boat for so long.
We finished our trip in Bingen, having had a crash-course in speaking German full time again.  From there Thomas rode the train back to Koblenz and we continued on to Wiesenheim am Berg, Marianne's German home.
