The Light of Day

Suzanne

Seriously considering the consequences
she marches among the wild
with an aura of invulnerability about her
an asp draped around her neck.

Knowing no boundaries
infiltration excites her senses
as she invites herself into unknown territory
searching for the provincials
described in century-old chronicling.

The landscape, rugged yet penetrable
reveals no signs of anthropological presence
like footprints
campfires or plantings.
Determined to move forward
confident that her maps are genuine
she proceeds north
recessing on the hour
for a sip from the canteen
a glance through the spyglass.

Knowing not what her next move might yield
her knee boots emerge
from an acre of thick woods.
Body wrapped in khaki
hair long and blonde and feral
the revealing skin cinnamon brown
from the days heat
she steps into a collection of spears
acknowledges the validation
of Suzannes mission.
