Building Up To Conflict
In 1952 Colonel Gaman Abdel Nasser staged a military coup, overthrowing the Egyptian monarchy and replacing it with a military dictatorship.  Under Nasser's control, Egypt's hostilities towards Israel intensified.  Nasser was determined to avenge the Egyptian defeat in the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49 by staging a new conflict that would utterly eliminate the new nation.  On May 27 Nasser was quoted saying "Our basic objective will be the destruction of Israel".  Nasser's plan was to unite the Arab countries against Israel, and began by allying with Syria.  On May 16, 1967 Nasser accused Israel of aggressively threatening Syria.  Coming to Syria's aid, Nasser placed 120,000 troops and about 2,000 tanks near the Israeli-Egyptian border, and on May 18 he demanded that the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) withdraw from their patrol of the cease-fire line.  On May 22 Nasser placed garrisons at Sharm el-Sheikh, as a blockade of the Strait of Tiran.  To add to the forces against Israel, Nasser signed the Mutual Security Treaty with Jordon.  Israel was now up against Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and, eventually, Iraq.
Prior to the Conflict, the Israel army was better trained, more flexible, and had heavier-armed aircrafts than did their opponents.  Despite this advantage, the odds were not in their favor, because they were facing a three front war.
