| During the Six Day War, Israel was challenged at three fronts: the Sinai Front, Jordanian Front, and Syrian Front. Sinai Front: With the allied Arab forces at three of their borders, Israel held little hope of winning the war. To add to their ill chances, the United States refused to uphold their responsibilities agreed to in 1956 and did not get involved. With these preconditions, Israel decided to create an advantage by strking first. On June 5, Israel struck the Egyptian forces by flying over the Mediterranean and into Egypt, where planes bombed almost all of the Egyptian airfields, destroying Egypt's air force. Later that day, Israel continued their bombings by destroying the Syrian and Jordan forces. Also, Israel sent an air raid to Iraq, which had previously struck against Israel. With the enemy air forces destroyed, Israel was left to concentrate on their ground forces. Israeli Major General Israel Tal's division began the ground offensives by driving into the Gaza Strip. Simultaneously, other Israeli forces attacked the Abu-Ageila-Kusseima area. Between the several attacks, the Israeli forces cut off the Egyptian retreat. On June 6, Israel Tal and his forces went towards the Suez Canal, where his forces joined those of Avraham Yoffe in fighting the Egyptian forces. By the end of the day, Egyptian commander in chief Abdel Hakim Amer ordered his troops to withdraw. By the end of the day, the Egyptians had completely pulled out of the Sinai Penninsula. On June 7, Israel Tal's forces followed the retreating Egyptians, destroying most of Egypt's tanks, and Israeli airstrikes killed many Egyptians, putting those left under Israeli control. By June 9, the Sinai Front was won and the Israeli forces controlled the Sinai penninsula. |
