| Israel viewed war with Jordan as an opportunity to gain Jordan's share of Jerusalem, which had been divided between Jordan and Israel after the 1948-49 war. Jordan's half of Jerusalem happened to contain some of the most sacred sites of the Jewish religion, especially the Western Wall of the Temple Mount. Israel saw this war as a chance to regain this land. Also, Israel hoped to benefit from gaining Jordan's West Bank. King Hussein ibn Talal (r.1953-1999) of Jordan recognized these threats from Israel and wanted to avoide war with Israel while at the same time satisfying his alliances with the Arabian forces. The Egyptians had misleadingly told Jordan that Israel's air forces had been destroyed by Egyptian forces, so Hussein planned to fire long-range artillery against Tel Aviv, hoping this would not provoke war. Unfortunately, this artillerty fire threatened Israel's northern air base at Ramot David. On June 5, Israel decided to go to war against Jordan, battling for Jerusalem and Jenin-Nablus. Like with the Sinai front, Israel again initiated the attack, but this time in Jerusalem. On June 5 Israel began closing in on the old walls of Jerusalem. This advance was slowed down by opposition on June 6, yet between ground, air, and tank attacks, Israel gained control of the old Jerusalem Road. On June 7 the Israeli Colonel Mordechai Gur entered Old Jerusalem, forcing Jordanian forces to retreat. With Jerusalem lost to Israel, it was not long before Jordan troops also gave up Bethlehem, Hebron, and Etzion. Later on the 7th, the UN Security Council called for the firghting to end, an agreement that both sides accepted. In Jenin-Nablus the Israli forces approached the Jordanian forces at Jenn, and the city was taken by the end of June 6. On June 7 the Israeli forces pressed on into Nablus, which they also took after considerable fighting. Just before night, the Jordanian forces retreated across the Jordan river and agreed to a UN ceasefire. |
