Over the course of reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding, we have discussed the book as a reaction to World War II and to "happy ending" castaway narratives such as The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne . One of the recurring themes of the text has been that of the darkness of humans. Golding was convinced that humans, when left to their own devices, would eventually destroy each other for one reason or another. Now it is your turn to form and develop an opinion on the nature of humans. In essence, are humans more subject to good will or inhumanity? As for human good will, think philanthropic, charity, small heroic acts, organ donations, relief efforts, and so forth. As for inhumanity, think of wars, mass killings, terrorism, torture, and so forth.
