Lord of the Flies Projects

Project Six: Independent Reading

Instructions

  • Select one of the following books to read: The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, or Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. While you are reading, consider how it differs from Lord of the Flies. Some points of consideration: overall message, characters, storyline.
  • Brainstorm a list of the major differences and similarities between the two books. You may Google a Venn Diagram graphic organizer to help you in this process.
  • Organize your thoughts into a five-paragraph outline. Each of your body paragraphs will focus on a different element of each story. For example, your first body paragraph my focus on the major characters. Your second body paragraph may focus on what actually happens on the islands. Your thesis should relate the major differences between the two stories.
  • Write a draft of your paper. It should be no more and no less than three pages and in MLA format (this means typed, double-spaced, twelve-point, Times New Roman). If you need help, consult the Brief Holt Handbook and your teacher. Show a draft to Mr. Fritz for advice, etc.
  • Type up your final copy. Proofread. Spell check. Read aloud to someone else and to yourself.
  • Be prepared to present. Click on rubric to make sure that you have met all of the requirements.
  • Submit to iNote
