"Just Let me Play the Piano.."

DAVID LANZ

         David's official website

*Who is David Lanz?

"Just let me play the piano," he says.

PLAYING THE PIANO, Lanz says, is his greatest form of self-expression, especially at his concert performances where he effortlessly blends his emotionally affecting music with audience involvement and his own charming comic.

David Lanz was born in 1950 in Seattle, USA and he started playing piano from 4 years old. He played the keyboard in a rock group called "Brahman" in the 70s and this experience later made him realize that he was not fond of stirring and non-tendering sounds and brought him back to sit in front of the piano again.

He released his first album "Heart Sounds" in 1983 and started his new life as a New Age Musician since then. He continued to release his musical albums until 1988 when his "Cristofori's Dream " album made a great hit. He was known by more people around the world because of "Cristofori's Dream."

What makes David different is his ability to connect with the audience. Fans of David Lanz, who have been to his concerts, says that he pauses between each song with little jokes and anecdotes and is quite a good storyteller. He also shares the inspiration behind his music and what prompted him to write certain pieces. It is these moments where the audience shares not only his music, but an intimate part of his life.

When he came to Korea for a his own music concert, he heard a Korean folk tale about "Togaebi()" from his fans. He was inspired by this Korean folk tale and composed a sng called "Masque of Togaebi".

You might have heard his music played in department stores as background. His music just lends itself to the "easy-listening" genre, and makes beautiful background music to many things. You can visit his home page here. You can hear all of his beautiful sounds here by selecting from the various CDs on the page. If you like beautiful pianoscapes, it doesn't get any better than this.

*How do I feel about David Lanz's Music?

The best way to describe Lanz is "extraordinary." He is a piano superstar!! He bridges well the gap between contemproray instrumental music and popular hit songs. His song never fails to move me and to fill me with a sense of serenity.

I remember the first time I heard David Lanz's music. The first music I heard was "Return to Heart" when my boyfriend played it on a piano set up outside a music store in a department store. An entire group of people gathered around, and when his "performance" was over everybody around him applauded vigorously, even the shop manager.

After hearing the music played by my boyfriend, I thought it would be a good idea to listen to the piece on CD, to get an idea of how it sounds when the piece was played by David Lanz, and to hear the emotion and feeling he portrays through his music.

I often lie on the bed and close my eyes to listen to it. I find it calming and let it take me to places outside myself. It invokes images of both places I have been and places I'd love to go to someday; emotions I've felt and some I hope to someday feel. I especially like the "White : A DAvid Lanz Collection" CD the most, probably because this CD has many different kinds of melody that I can listen to. I guess in this CD the melody varies from one music track to another music track because this CD is a COLLECTION! Also I am attached to this CD, because I personally own it and because there is one song that relates to my home country Korea - "Masque of Togaebi".
