GUNNERS
   SPECIAL TRIBUTE
During WW2 the Merchant Marine fleet played a major role in winning the war.   Without them the munitions and supplies needed in the European and Asian theatres would never have been delivered.  More Merchant Marines were killed in the war, per capita, than other individual branches of the service.  Assigned to these Merchant Marine ships were the Navy Armed Guard.  These men were specially trained "gunners" who would man the weapons to defend the ships against attack.   The Armed Guard served on 2,710 liberty ships of which 216 were sunk by the enemy.  They served on 6,236 mercant ships, of which 710 were sunk and many more damaged.
Armed Guard gunners from WW2 are Bob Swank and Joe Piccolini.
The 5 inch gun aboard the S.S. LaneVictory.  This took 11 gunners to operate and fire it.
I got to meet General Patton on the cruise.  He's still as gruff as ever.
My son, Danny, at the twin 20mm guns.  Quite a weapon.
German planes attacked us during the cruise.  The gunners and two arriving American fighters helped to drive them off.

must
for everyone.

Dave Cole with the 560th MPs give us his best M60 pose.  Dave and other MPs rode the cargo ships up the Saigon River for off-loading of their cargo.  MPs also rode the tug boats that pulled barges full of munitions and supplies down into the Mekong Delta.  Two MPs provided security along the way and were armed with M14's, M79 grenade launchers and the M60.  Above a 560th MP and an Australian MP on joint patrol in Vung Tau.

Karl Ford was with the "Keepers of the Keys", the 284th MPs at the Long Binh Jail from 1970-71.  Above, drying laundry and to the right.
