| Mother and Father both hail from the north of England ...a city called Bolton in Lancashire. Mum's family were quite wealthy and had the coal franchise for the city. AND her father was mean... during the depression my Gran used to cook huge pots of food and pass it over the back fence to feed the local families who had less food but my Grandfather never knew. Once on a visit to Australia when I was very ill and home from school and 11, my gran sat besidee me and suggested I should never get married or give my heart to ANY man because despite what they appear , ONE never knows what one GETS..... I never listened. I understand what she meant far better now. Mum was one of 7 children...and was offered a scholarship at 11..my grandfather wouldn't let her accept it becasue she was merely a girl and after all she would just get married anyways so it was a waste - Mum claimed she never resented it.. I am NOT so sure.... When Mum married Dad, Gran thought Dad would provide for Mum. The reality was that my Dad had a wonderful heart - he was the kind of man that would take his shirt off and give it to someone in need, but he expected perfection from all of us close. Everything my family have is more because of Mum than dad, She is the brain, and the one who dealt with Reality. Dad was the Dreamer who took all the credit for what THEY did. Mum was the Rock. Female strength is not a surprise to me. Because of who SHE is, I can be. Dad was the youngest of 14, dock poor Irish immigrants... working class through and througb. His oldest brother was 48 when he was born and My grandfather on that side didn't live long afterwards leaving Annie with all those children to raise. Annie was no fashion plate according to my mother...Dad left school at 14 to learn a trade... he apprenticed as a boilermaker....and had a beautiful singing voice. |
