Storyline
"Fushigi Yuugi" translated as "The Mysterious Play", the story isn't really about a "play", the Japanese word Yuugi can also be translated into "game", which in my opinion is a better word because in a RPG game you become the main character and you become part of the story, and in Fushigi Yuugi that's the case.
It's a story about 15 year old Miaka Yuuki (the herorine of the story) who lives the life of an everyday teenager (though she's a well known glutton). Well the story starts with Miaka going to the Library with her best friend Yui Hongo, as she waits for Yui she notices a glowing or some sort of light drawing her into a off limits area which contains important documents. As she enters the room (which JUST SO HAPPEN TO BE UNLOCKED) she finds an old Chinese book called "Shi Jin Ten Chi Cho" translated as "Universe of the Four Gods", Yui is with Miaka as she discovers the book (I forgot how, I think she followed her or something like that n_n;).
As Miaka and Yui read the first few lines of the book they suddenly get "sucked" into it. The two discover themselves in a different world and time, some slave traders hassle them when a boy by the name of Tamahome beats up the guys and rescues the girls (but asks for money in return). Yui suddenly vanishes and returns back to the library she realizes Miaka is still in the book world and reads along as Miaka tries to find Yui (she didn't seem to notice Yui disappear eh?) she decides to ask that boy who saved them since she knows no one and this new place seems to resemble ancient China.......
Miaka follows the boy and soon she gets herself and Tamahome thrown into the palace prison for harrassing the Emperor as he was being carried (in one of those box like things that have long sticks coming from the box for servants to lift) through the streets. Apparently as she was asking the Emperor for a favor she almost tripped sparking a red light to surround her body and she was able to see Yui back in the library reading the "Universe of the Four Gods" (Miaka has become the main character of the book and it now narrates everything that happens to Miaka in the book).
Now back to the prison, Miaka and Tamahome manage to escape because the palace guard became frightened after seeing Miaka's chewing gum..... Miaka is then confronted by the Emperor and learns the legend of a girl who will come from another world to become the Suzaku no Miko (Priestess of Suzaku) and will gain the power of the Phoenix deity to save their country in their time of need and have her wishes come true. Miaka not knowing how to return home, agrees and becomes Suzaku no Miko. But it's not as easy as it sounds, in order to gain Suzaku's power Miaka must gather the Suzaku seishi (Suzaku seven), seven people with special powers, baring the mark of Suzaku in the form of various chinese characters on any part of their body. Luckily for Miaka, Tamahome and the Emperor - Hotohori are both Suzaku Seishi, but she still has to find five more members......
