OBITUARIES

At first sight not a pleasant topic - but milestones that we all have to face, particularly as seniors. So while we offer our condolences to their families, where possible, we should celebrate their lives and acknowledge how the Venerables/Heydon Seniors have enjoyed their company.

REG NEVILLE

Reg Neville died on 18 April 2009 aged 79. He had recently been off colour and went to Addenbrookes where he was diagnosed with advanced leukemia. He died of a heart attack a few days later.

Early in his career he joined the Royal Navy where he specialised in aircraft mainenance. When he left the Navy he joine an aircraft engineering company serving mainly in Southern Africa; he started in Zambia, then Botswana and finally Zimbabwe where he spent many years. On retirement he decided to continue as an independent specialist. He worked on various training assignments at home and abroad - well into his seventies. He was an acknowleged expert on Boeing 737's.

Golf became his major relaxation, he actually turned down a work assignment to come to Le Touquet on one of the Venerables' French tours, see photos below. He was a lovely man and we miss him.

TONY MOORE

Tony Moore died on 16 June 2005 aged 68. His death came as a shock to all of us as we were awaiting his expected return from Sri Lanka. He died in Addenbrooks of an infected ulcer after flying back for treatment.

He was a successful businessman having worked amongst others for Courages, Coral Bookmakers & Casinos and the Scout Association.

He came to golf late in life and as we know attacked it with enthusiasm and fervour. In his early years he played soccer, water polo, tennis, cricket and most of all hockey where he represented Swindon and Wiltshire as a goalkeeper in the 1960s and 70s.

We first met him when he came to Heydon Grange and quickly reduced his handicap to a respectable level. He joined in on our tours and will be well remembered for his putting dual in 2002 outside Le Manoir (see below). He often brought his no nonsense style into play when socialising and yet he came back for more and travelled to Thorpeness and Le Touquet on a regular basis. He also enjoyed the club matches and represented the Seniors on many occasions, always giving his very best. He will be missed.

He leaves a wife and two daughters.

David Soanes - June 2005

DAVID GARRETT MEMBER FROM 2003-5

The news of the recent death of David Garrett as a result of a heart attack came as a shock to members of Heydon Seniors who have played with him and grown to know him during his short period as a member. He will be remembered as a quiet unassuming, courteous man, friendly to all he met and will be missed both as a partner on the course and in the clubhouse. As a golfer David displayed the very same likeable characteristics, always supportive and appreciative of the efforts of others and always scrupulously fair. He cheerfully recognised his limitations as a golfer but quickly reduced his handicap from 28 to 21 and undoubtedly would have recorded better figures as he progressed in the game. To David it was playing golf and enjoying his time at the club and not the result that was important.

It is a matter of regret that that he was not seen at Heydon during the final weeks of his life as a result of of a skiing accident, with damage to his leg. He was 68 years of age and leaves a wife and 3 grown up children.

Derek Cupit - April 2005

LEWIS PAYNE, Royal Navy

Lewis died on Monday 2nd March, aged 76. Evidently it happened suddenly because John Muir had been in contact with him a few days earlier.

The Venerables will remember Lewis from the Meridian days. He was probably the best dressed of all of us - he wore a tie on the course. He was not the best of golfers, but he certainly tried. We had a competition on who would take the most shots on the ninth - he led the field with an awesome 26. We will always remember Lewis on the fourth exclaiming " I think I am going to shout FORE", before taking his swing.

He joined Heydon Grange when we moved, but only played a few games. He was a much liked member of our group.

Our condolences go to his family

JOHN LUND 1933 - 2003

With some of his Venerable friends at Thorpness in 2001.

John Lund died suddenly on 16 July 2004. His death came as a shock to all of us as there was no indication of any ill health, other than a back-related problem which he was getting over. Our deepest sympathies go to Cynthia.

After four years in the RAF John joined Marshalls in 1955 and had a long and successful career in the aerospace industry. He was involved in the maintenance and modification of some 30 different types of aircraft for the RAF and foreign airforces. His work involved extensive overseas travel. Most of his service was in a supervisory capacity, ending up as General Manager of three hangars. He was awarded the MBE in 1995 in recognition of his important contribution to the Aircraft Industry. He retired from Marshalls in 2000.

We got to know him through golf at the Cambridge Meridian and at Heydon Grange. His contribution to the Venerables was included his extraordinary bonhomie, infectious humour and his on-course treats (choice refreshments, including Red Bull). He was a fine and promising golfer - what a shame he did not have time to fulfill his undoubted potential. He was a candidate for shooting his age.

We will miss him.

BILL COOK 1939 - 2003

Bill died peacefully on 17 July 2003 at his daughter's house in Stevenage following a long and extremely bravely borne illness. For a special tribute to Bill who did so much for the Venerables go to billcook

VIV BROTHWELL

Viv died on 26 July 2002 from a heart disease that she had bravely borne for many years. We first met her in 1994 when she came to the Cambridge Meridian Golf Club with husband Ken who was our Club Steward and indeed an early member of the Venerables. They occupied the flat above the club house, so we got to know them well. They left in 1999 to go to the Royston Golf Club. But we still kept in touch, particularly at the Venerables' annual dinners. The last time most of us saw her was at our valedictory dinner at Heydon Grange in March (see photo in social events).

She endeared us all with twinkling eyes and cheery smile - she will be missed by us all. Our condolences and best wishes go to Ken and to Steve.

ALAN ORAM 1929 -2002

Mary Oram's husband, Alan, passed away peacefully on August 30. As you know, Mary was a stalwart of the Cambridge Meridian Golf Club. She became Ladies Captain and then Chairman of the Club; and was a great friend of the Venerables. Alan did not play golf at the Club - largely because he was was still working. However he made up for this when on holiday, and we did see him at most of the Club functions.

Alan was a forester. The Orams spent their early married days in the West Country and then lived for twenty years in Fiji. They had two children , Peter and Louise.

Those of us who knew him will miss his sense of humour, his enjoyable arguments and his appreciation of good food and wines. Our deepest sympathies go to Mary.

The Venerables were well represented at Alan's funeral and later at their house. Mary's letter below to us was most touching:

OLIVE FRAMPTON

We have just heard of Olive Frampton's sudden and totally unexpected death in her sleep only days after arriving at their holiday home in Spain. The last time some of us would have seen her was at the recent Charity Golf Day at Malton.

Our sincerest condolences go to John.
