HARLEQUINS (HOME) - Thursday, August 7, 2003
| Chichester sweltered on, and at a humid New Park Road we attempted to wreak vengeance on a Harlequins side which had beaten us with some comfort earlier in the season. The 'Quins won the toss, and sensibly elected to bat: however, the vagaries of the New Park Road wicket, combined with accurate bowling from Shaun Bevis (off a short run-up) conspired to restrict them to 101 from their allotted overs. However, ferocious batting from Loafing openers Trevor Almack and Dave Burford raised the fifty in just the eighth over, and the 'Quins cause seemed lost until Peach entered the fray: his gentle medium pace induced Almack to play on for 34; Windsor Holden attempted to pull his first ball for four, and instead met the same fate as Almack by under edging onto his stumps; and, three balls later, Alec Wallsgrove was bowled for a duck. "Keeps you honest, that pitch", he said wearily: as he removed his pads, a fourth Loafer was returning to the hutch in the shape of Henry Rawlings, and the Loafers had slumped from 53 for none to 58 for four. The 'Quins sniffed victory, attacking fields were set: Burford's response - and that of new batsman Gary McDougal - was merely to up the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries, as the Loafers won at a canter with more than five overs to spare, Burford ending on 33 not out. Loafers won by six wickets. |
