AUTOLEC (HOME) - Thursday, May 29, 2003
The weather had relented after the previous week's arctic masterclass to leave New Park Road bathed in early summer sunshine with not a Neil Holmes pullover in sight. The opposition, Autolec, generously invited the Loafers to bat, and openers Dave Burford and Trevor Almack responded with a useful partnership of 25 before Burford was caught at mid-on for 13. He was replaced by Alec Wallsgrove who added a further 41 with Almack before, in an attempt to repeat a drive through mid wicket that had brought him a boundary two balls earlier, he was caught off a leading edge that sailed to mid-off. Shortly afterwards the redoubtable Mr Almack was bowled for 28, and when Neil Holmes was run out for 7 the Loafers' chances of reaching three figures suddenly looked remote. However, some lusty blows from Shaun Bevis (12 not out) and Tony Eastwood (16 not out) caused havoc in the later stages, with 24 coming from the last two overs.
Chasing 115 to win, Autolec set off at a fair pace with the moustachioed figure of Chas Hammerton and his opening partner Pendall dispatching a number of deliveries to the boundary. However, Autolec were dealt a cruel blow when Pendall was forced to retire hurt with a pulled muscle: his replacement then pulled a Gary McDougal delivery straight to the square leg fielder, and almost immediately afterwards the Chas 'tash was on its way to the pavilion after Mr Hammerton was bowled by Holmes. A period of consolidation followed, but two quick wickets for Bevis - one of which was of sufficient pace for the fielders to have to play "hunt the bail" afterwards - and a run out further slowed the assault, and despite a towering six off John Simons, Autolec fell well short of their target.
Victory assured, the Loafers retired to the Coach & Horses in pursuit of their next target, namely Fursty Ferret and chicken curry. This target was also achieved.
